The bulk of the 2nd Armored Division loaded onto their LSTs on D-Day and started across the channel. They arrived off Omaha Beach in the afternoon, spending the night on the ships. In the darkness, the Germans fired an occasional artillery round at the ships. On LST hit an enemy mine and sank, taking to the bottom seventeen medium and fourteen light tanks, six quarter-ton trucks, six half-tracks, and three assault guns. The sixty-six casualties included seven killed, however, most of the wounded or missing returned to duty within two days. The explosion was so strong that it jarred the ship carrying General Brooks and the division staff.
